| Most Illicit Drug Users and Heavy Alcohol Drinkers Have Jobs Most people who abuse alcohol or other drugs are not out of work and living on the streets. They are employed. Therefore, it is entirely possible that workplace alcohol and other drug problems may be affecting your employees’ health, safety, and productivity. SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that roughly 75 percent of the estimated 16.4 million illicit drug users ages 18 or older are employed full or part time. In a large study of illicit drug use in highly educated employees, 42 percent of respondents reported using mood-altering prescription drugs. The effects of substance abuse can be life threatening, especially in businesses where safety is a major concern, such as the transportation and nuclear power industries. For this reason, Federal and State laws address drug use in workplaces, especially in the context of safety, and impose requirements for drug-free workplace policies and programs, including drug testing.
