DRUG ABUSE RECOGNITION
FOR COMMUNITIES
"Reducing Drug Abuse Through Recognition
And Community Awareness"
Workplace drug and alcohol abuse costs businesses a hundred billion
dollars a year. But a solid anti-abuse program can help curb it at your
organization.

Despite the stereotype of addicts as unemployed losers on street corners,
nearly 80 % of adult abusers are employed.

You might know them by their absentee records. They’re likely to be gone
at 2.5 times the rate of the average employee.

Or you know them by their workmen’s comp claims, which run 3 to 5 times
those of non-abusers. Between 30 percent and 50 percent of all workers’
comp claims are generated by abusers.

Maybe you know them by the expenses they generate against your health
plan … 300 percent higher than non-abusers.

According to the U. S. Department of Labor, small businesses have enormous power to
improve the safety and health of their workplaces and employees by implementing drug-free
workplace programs that educate employees about the dangers of drug abuse and encourage
individuals with related problems to seek help. Such programs help reduce occupational
injuries and illnesses and send a clear signal that employers care about the safety and health
of their employees.

To help small businesses benefit from being drug-free, the Department of Labor and OSHA's
Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace program offers small businesses a
range of free and easy-to-use tools to help them maintain safe, healthy and drug-free
workplaces.

Generally, a comprehensive drug-free workplace program includes five components:

  • Drug-Free Workplace Policy
  • Supervisor Training
  • Employee Education
  • Employee Assistance and
  • Drug Testing

SUPERVISOR TRAININGS:
In relation to a drug-free workplace program, supervisors’ responsibilities should include
monitoring employees’ performance, staying alert to and documenting performance problems,
and enforcing the policy. Supervisors should not be expected to diagnose alcohol- and drug-
related problems or provide counseling to employees who may have them.  Recognition of
symptoms and documentation of signs of impairment is key for a safe workplace.

Supervisor trainings include recognition of:
  • Drugs
  • Drug Paraphernalia
  • Eye Clues
  • Physical Symptoms
  • Behavioral Signs
  • Medical Traits

EMPLOYEE EDUCATION:
A drug and alcohol education program provides employees with the information they need to
fully understand, cooperate with and benefit from their company’s drug-free workplace
program.

Effective employee wellness programs provide information about the nature of alcohol and
drug addiction; its impact on work performance, health and personal life; prevention strategies
for families recognition of early warning signs and treatment resources.

Employee Workshops include recognition of:
  • Drugs
  • Drug Paraphernalia
